If you are a local history buff, then The Upper Bay Museum is a place for you. Every item of local (waterman's) water history has been donated from families whose relatives have used them.Driving through North East will not locate the Museum....Even though it is only two block off of Main Street (RT#272 South). You can also fish (without a license) from the Museum dock, watch the Bald Eagles and Osprey (they abound), and in late spring listen for the slapping of the Carp on the banks of the north East River (they are ejecting their eggs). Don't miss this stop. Admission is by donation only.
For those not familiar with a maritime life the museum shows one facet of that. Lots of decoys, and duck hunting gear on display. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
The Upper Bay Museum is a compact museum with a lot of interesting bay history. The historian who I spoke with was very knowledgeable and interesting. Some of the displays really give an idea of what bay life was like "back in the day."
What a pleasure it is to see the revitalization of the museum. Looking forward to it's reopening in the Spring.
Talk about a blast. I was at their Grand Season Opening (Memorial Day Weekend) and the museum set off historical hunting demonstrations. It is a great place focusing on local waterman and hunters. I wouldn't miss this place on your bucket list. There is no admission fee but a donation box out.
