Spent another wonderful afternoon sharing time with long time friends and their family at a potluck event. Caught up on family news and events; shared some talk of our travels; enjoyed delicious food and wine. Brought some homemade brownies and corn pudding and came away with a few bottles of my favorite wine. They had a nice selection out to share during the afternoon. Also enjoyed the art works displayed in the upstairs gallery done by local artists and Maureen Curtis.
We visited this winery today and I have to say our visit was very pleasantly surprising! The tour was incredibly through, tons of information. This is about 99% family run and owned winery, which we thought was great. The wine, while not our favorite in MD, is probably in the top 3 or so. We only tried red wines ($5 for about 6 wines) and they were all pretty good. We ended up purchasing the American Barbara and a Blackberry fruit wine (which we didn't try, but were intrigued). The bottle prices were really quite reasonable, given that you were purchasing at the winery. We expected them to be higher. The tasting was so full of information, it was amazing and super fun. We enjoyed a glass outside on the patio with our sandwiches. Totally worth the visit. Quite a beautiful garden around, lots of butterflies
We tried five wines from Friday's Creek at a wine dinner. The wines paired very well with each course. If you like dry reds, try the Cabernet Franc and Barbera Calvert. Also, the Cayuga paired very nicely with the dessert course -- an apple tart with vanilla ice cream and a warm fruit compote.
We visited a few wineries on a day in southern Maryland. While we were there, the staff at one winery suggested we stop here at Fridays Creek on our way back home. They have a pretty tasting room, but the wine was not very good. I was also irritated that the man pouring our tasting misunderstood what we wanted to taste, and I tried two wines I did not request. I thought maybe he was letting me try them because my husband was trying those wines, but then I realized he just wasn't listening to us. Since I did not care for the wines, I didn't push the issue to insist that he give me two more tastes.
A friend and I drove from Annapolis for an afternoon outing. We were the only people there. We opted to taste 6 of their wines ($5). We and our husbands drink a lot of wine and have been to other wineries in Maryland, as well as New York State, California (Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Barbara), France, and Germany. I gave up after tasting 4 of the wines. They were absolutely undrinkable, the worst wines I have ever tasted. Some of the grapes are grown there on land which used to grow tobacco. I should have been warned when the description of the wine said it had a tobacco taste. It was like licking a dirty ash tray. I would avoid this winery at all costs.
Friday's Creek Winery never disappoints. The grounds are lovely, the tasting room is charmingly rustic, and the upper level art gallery is a nice surprise! What could be better than tasting locally produced wine while viewing (and purchasing!) works by local artists? We'll return to Friday's Creek again and again!
