I have used Pocomoke River Canoe & Kayak a couple times now and have been very pleased with both trips. They are very accommodating on when you'd like to go, in fact I am pretty sure we were the only ones who went that day on my second trip. The price is very affordable, and a friendly member of the staff will transport you and your boats to the drop point(15-20 min drive if I remember correctly). The trip itself takes about 3 hours with little to no current. It does require a decent amount of effort, so make sure you come ready for a workout.I would also suggest, that depending on the time year and how much rain has recently fallen, that you wear long sleeves, pants and a hat. On BOTH trips I took down the river my group was stalked by horse flies which became an almost constant nuisance.
We were originally going to rent kayaks at the state park, but they were closed this late in the year (October 28, 2014). And, wow, were we happy about that! This company opened up just for us, portaged us to a great drop off place and away we went into a small creek full of beautiful cypress trees with lovely knees! Then the creek opened up to the Pokomoke River. Gorgeous time of year! This establishment rents kayaks, canoes, etc. So accommodating.
We had a great 3 hour paddle this past weekend. The first half of the trip was in the cypress trees, with lots of shade; after that the river opens up a bit with lots of birds and turtles. The staff in the shop could not be more pleasant and accommodating. They rent a variety of Old Town kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. There is almost no current in the river and for anyone new to paddling this is a great place to give it a try.
A great 3 hour float down a lazy river. The top half is nice and narrow with cypress trees and shade, the second half is wider and more open with lots of basking turtles. Two person canoes, kayaks and single kayaks are available. In neat little town of Snow Hill.
We stayed at Snow Hill on a whim, and wanted to rent a canoe during the week. We called and sent a message by email, and they responded quickly even though they were closed during the week. They were very accommodating, and rented us a rod and reel, and provided bait.
We are so glad that we went off the beaten path and discovered the Pocomoke River Canoe Company! We always take of kayaks with us when we visit OC, but wanted something different than the Bay. The company is located in a historic old lumber warehouse...lots of neat photos and history on the walls. Barry suggested a few trips we could take on the River...for a small fee he drove us and our kayaks up to a launching point on the Pocomoke. We put in and slowly paddled thru a cypress forest...amazing! The river opens up and we leisurely paddled down the river, spotting many turtles and birds. The trip took us about two and a half hours...and we didn't have to paddle upstream! They also rent equipment if you don't have your own. Great change of pace during our trip. Will definitely go back!
Tool a 2 person kayak down from red house back to the shop. The guy from the shop was very friendly and helpful. He drives you with the kayaks, paddles and life jackets a few miles away and you can come back. Perfect for kayaking the small and scenic creeks of the pocomoke. Boats and gear was in good condition. Saw some cool wildlife including a water snake, turtles, and plenty of big birds. Great for a wildlife enthusiast!
