This is a must visit place in Annapolis. First time I went there with a friend who is an alum of academy and had the opportunity to watch a basketball game also.
My husband taught here many years ago, so he found many changes. Walked the campus, visited the museum. The officers' housing is historic and worth a drive through the neighborhood. Nice way to spend an afternoon.
My sons team was lucky enough to play a hockey game at the US Navy rink. We had a little time before to walk through the area. Snow covered grounds made the area look beautiful. I only wish the weather was nicer and we had more time to sight see
Beautiful visitors center with informative movie and gift shop. We attended an Admission's Office presentation which lasted about an hour that gave you an in depth sense of what it would be like to be a midshipmen. We also did the paid walking tour which was very informative with several stops and insider stories along the way. Stops included the chapel, tomb of John Paul Jones, a dorm room, and much more. I would highly recommend taking the tour instead of just walking around yourself.
Tried to go to USNA to buy tickets for their winter musical performance. At the gate we asked the guard for directions to their visitor center; he asked for an ID, told us we couldn't park inside the gate, handed us off to the next sentry. When we repeated our question, he said the next guard would tell us; the second guard told us we couldn't park (we knew that) and when we told him we simply were trying to get directions to the visitor center he told us we had to park outside, walk in and then ask inside--if he told us directions, he said, "we would only forget them." Amazingly we discovered the visitor center was about 20 feet inside the gate. Not only were they extremely unhelpful, insulting about our ability to process directions but also officious. When we got to the visitor center, they were aware of the performance but told us the website for buying tickets is only open on weekdays, even though the performance was occurring Saturday night. The whole experience was bureaucratic and not at all welcoming, unlike our excellent tour last summer at West Point, where the guards were helpful, directed us where to park, and receptionists were helpful as well. Go ARMY!
This is such an impressive facility, and so much history! A worthwhile tour if you are in the area, or, if you know any young person contemplating a naval career.
The Wesley Brown Field House is an amazing venue and the campus was beautiful. Enjoyed my time there.
Whwn in Annapolis be sure to take the tour of the US Naval Academy. You will be greeted by a knowlegable guide who will take you through campus. It is well worth the time.
This is a place we take all of our out of town visitors to see. Especially enjoy the chapel and that wonderful organ.
A great way to spend a day. Wander the grounds. Visit the tomb of John Paul Jones. Watch the midshipman drill. The campus is beautiful. It is located on the Severn River in downtown Annapolis. If you are there in the spring a must see is the climbing of Mt Herndon. There is no parking on the academy grounds. Must have photo ID at the gate
Its a fun place to visit, but to have a good time, you need a true appreciation for both the navy and the armed forces. Its not enjoyable for people who dislike history (specifically military history), or for people who are easily bored. The intellectual in your group or the history buff will enjoy it. I rated it as average because it can swing either way depending on your group. I enjoy history, but I got very bored. You could enjoy the school more if you are approaching it with the lenses of that of either a prospective student, family member of a student, or veteran (of the school/navy).At the least, it's a pleasant walk on a nice, relaxing day.
You can see the past, and the future in the faces of the cadets as they live their life at the Academy. As you tour the amazingly beautiful campus, it is hard not to feel proud of those who have graduated & served our country, and of those men and women to come. Outside the gates, enjoy a meal at the many wonderful, quaint resturants & a walk around the outstanding state capital of Maryland, Annapolis.
Great town to eat and shop! Lots of history considering it was one of the nations 1st capitals! The waterfront is stellar great views
A must see when you are in Annapolis....the visitor center and a relaxing stroll around the campus is an ideal introduction.
Place is small, yet fascinating. Sandwiches are named after politicians. You may see the Governor, Mayor, State Senators and Congressmen there. It is always bus-y. The food and service are good.
