There is quite some competition in the Art space in Lagos these days. Since regular auctions have captured the attention there have been several additions to the number of galleries in Lagos and Red Door is consistently one of the best. Their exhibitions can be the already acclaimed, such as the recent Tola Weww and Lekan Onabanjo or the more innovative, such as the last show "Ase Oke - The Woven Beauty" that displayed a new look at the traditional woven cloth. The space itself is simple and uncluttered, the light is pretty good. In some shows I have noticed a tendency to crowd the hangings which I guess is a function of available room. As a collector prices seem at about a competitive level though this is difficult to test as recent attention on African Art has seen prices rise consistently over last five or even ten years and it is hard to keep track. Always worth a look and maybe make that investment!

Walking into their welcoming Red Door, you forget for a second that you're in Nigeria. the layout and décor could be anywhere in the world but the art is truly African...but fun, contemporary and modern all at the same time. However note that this is not a place to buy "local crafts"; its a proper gallery representing some of the most famous artists on the continent. The art isn't cheap but it is definitely value for money! One of my best experiences in Lagos!!
