When in Meru please see this museum. It is like a smaller version of the Nairobi National Museum complete with snake museum - GET A KENYA MUSEUM SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP CARD !!-The indoor exhibits are limited and some of the stuffed animals are in a poor condition. However it gives an impression of the region and it's people. The animals outside in the museum's courtyard are sad representatives of their relatives roaming free. In the courtyard is a small Meru village consisting of a few huts. With the extremely limit budget available for this museum they have achieved lots and it is great for Meru schoolkids to be educated in their own history and culture.Staff is very helpful and kind.Recommended!
First of all , why do I have to review the Meru National Park under "Meru Museum" please add this attraction on its own. Since having visited most of the Kenyan parks we decided to fly north east and visit this park. The first impression was of finding a whole different eco system with drastic changes within few meters. We managed to see a whole lot of giraffes, impalas, water bucks, elephants, white and black rhinos , buffalos and a huge variety of birds. Crocs , hippo, gerenuk, cheetah and lion and a rare gravy's zebra. We had no chance of seeing the leopard and just heard the roaring in the peace of the night. The Elsa's Kopje is an heaven of peace within this extension of untouched natural wilderness. In three days of safari we just saw 3/4 jeeps mostly from our same lodge....... really out of nowhere and mostly enjoyable....just to recommend for a change from the usual circuits.
I stayed at this park camping for two nights. This park is listed in the Northern tourism circuit of Kenya. This is a one stop wildlife spot. Here we found all the Big five+; the rolling plains here are ever green with about 14 ample rivers that, most of the flow throughout the year. Furthermore the park is the home of late Adamson's family with the famous Elsa history.Meru NP has Rhino sanctuary and here you will get them including the Black rhino. This park is designed for game drives only; you can't walk. Generally what you need is what you require while in special Safari... carry enough camera memory.I would recommend those visiting Kenya to think about this park... and you will never regret.
Meru National Park is a Kenyan Game park located east of Meru, 350 km from Nairobi. Covering an area of 870 km², it is one the famous known parks of Kenya. It has abundant rainfall, 635-762 mm in the west of the park and 305-356 mm in the east. The rainfall results in tall grass and lush swamps, which make it difficult to spot game. It has a wide range of wild beasts like elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhinoceros and some rare antelopes. Meru was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best selling book and award winning movie Born Free. Elsa the Lioness is buried in this park and part of Joy's ashes. The Mulika Lodge Airport serves Meru National Park. Tourist attractions include the home of George and Joy Adamson, Adamson's Falls, views of Mount Kenya, and the Tana River. This is a very exclusive place great for relaxation, peace , game and bird watching. Our stay here was very enjoyable especially that my guests stayed at Murera eco springs camp great especially whilst travelling with families venture omania africa safaris always recommends this resort.
