I managed to visit this place through kenya safari bookings and i really enjoyed being there i recommend this place for travelers
We enjoyed our stay in the conservancy! No other cars around, excellent views of the elephant from very close! Really enjoyed
Staying in, and traveling around the Selenkay Reserve was a highlight to our visit to Amboseli National Reserve. Incredibly remote with tremendous solitude, in comparison to the somewhat busy Reserve, with quite a few tour vehicles at every turn. We never encountered another vehicle throughout our time in Selenkay. The Porini Amboseli Camp in Selenkay was one the highlights to our visit of Kenya!
away from crowds in National Parks you feel like you are a true explorer with no other jeeps around--camps are limited
This is exactly what I imagined a safari experience would be, being able to look for and track animals 'off road' rather than having to stay on the established paths of a typical national park. Being able to go for game drives in the morning, afternoon and also at night after the sundowners was amazing, and a highlight was 'stumbling upon' a pride of lionesses and cubs and then later on the male lion 'teenagers' who had newly left the pride. I also loved seeing the elephants at the watering hole at sundown! The safari guides were all very knowledgeable and the vehicles were perfect, being open-sided. Knowing as well that the local Maasai benefit directly from the operation of the conservancy is the icing on the cake.
The conservancies in Kenya are really the way to do a safari now - true eco-tourism run by and with profits returned to the Maasai. A truly magical experience in dry acacia woodland with the most amazing guides Wilson and Shedrick. Wilson's knowledge and passion for sharing with guests is second to none and he really brought the bird life to us like no-one I've experienced before. No wonder he is one of the Amboseli spectacular but the conservancy land is the special part - we had a lioness and 9 cubs all to ourselves for as long as we wanted, amazing elephants, gerenuk and many many others. I have been to Kenya 4 times now and I cannot recommend this camp and in fact all the Porini camps enough - I guarantee a once in a lifetime experience!
This place was so beautiful. Saw so many different animals. If you want to see elephants, this is the place. I loved the red dirt here! Got to see the Gerenuk here. That was a treat!
I have wanted to go on a safari my entire life and on this trip around the world, did so. I chose very very carefully, looking at where the company operated, their reputation for giving back to the community and how the game drives were conducted and who did the conducting. I spent MONTHS looking and settled on Gamewatchers Porini Adventure Camp in Selenkay for a few reasons, the main ones being that they hire 97 percent of staff as Maasai. It is also on a conservancy, owned by the Maasai. There is one other camp (Porini again) in the entire conservancy. It's like a private reserve. our guide, Wilson, was superbly knowledgeable and excellent at finding wildlife and knowing their habits. This is the affordable option because it is traditional camping - tent, etc. The mattress was comfortable, there was a flush toilet and mirror in the stand-alone private bathroom and a camp shower. We ate together outside or under a tent. I liked this and prefer it to more upscale accommodations, because when else would I get to camp in the bush in Africa? The best part is that in this set-up the staff have a lot of interaction with you - we sat around the campfire each night with our camp staff, and showed photos, etc. I got to know them. One day we visited a Maasai village - one of the guys was from there. I felt like we had an invitation to get to know Maasai and benefit from their expertise that is unique to them and it was amazing. I cannot say enough good things about Selenkay or Lion Camp, where I went after Selenkay. One day we went to Amboseli National Park and while we saw more animals and monks and elephants, there were a lot more cars and I very much appreciated our "private" conservancy. If you are on a budget and want a superb experience, this is it. It is also more expensive than other camping budget options but i went with a company that had no bad reviews anywhere that I could find and I am glad I made that decision. I would spend that money gladly again. If you're only going to go on a safari once in life, do it right.
I loved this conservancy. It is beautiful in a dry-grass-and-acacia-trees way, with resident elephants, giraffes, lions and antelope sub-species galore. The bird life there is tremendous.
We've just spent two wonderful nights at a Porini Conservancy - 23rd & 24th August. After 17 years we returned to Selenkay Conservancy and what a difference! Private airstrip, private game drives, private camp hosting just 20 guests, private game-viewing in 15,000 acres of leased Maasai land....have I mentioned it's private! We spent nearly an hour alongside Selenkay lioness and her daughter + their 8 cubs without other vehicles jostling for the best possible photo shot - it was peaceful, magical. Our driver/guides Daniel & Richard (all Selenkay's guides are members of the Professional Safari Guide Association) were so knowledgeable...ask them anything about wildlife, bird-life (1,100!!!) flora & fauna and you open up the door to a flood of interesting facts. Far better to learn from a Maasai than look it up on the internet! We stayed in the Conservancy and were not disappointed, lion, elephant, gerenuk, zebra, dik dik, giraffe, African Civet, Jackals.....the list is endless. Camp staff were non-intrusively attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The Camp and accommodation is as you see on the Selenkay video/Gamewatchers Facebook page...the Go-Away (they don't mean it) birds are my favourite and there's no way of missing your early morning game drive once the Crested Francolin get started. But don't take my tripadvisor word for it - go & see for yourselves and experience a real eco-friendly 'private' safari. JJS
It made all the difference to be able to see wildlife while only seeing one other car, rather than the dozens that congregate on the roads when exciting things happen at the national park. Every hour we found something incredible, and were able to be right there - sometimes only 5-10 feet away. The conservancies are eco-friendly and support the local Masai communities, while being very affordable for low-cost travelers.
We were in the reserve as part of a three-day package. It allowed us to enjoy open vehicles (verrrry important), top guides, but access to the adjacent Amboseli NP. The reserve (in July) is dry, savannah woodland, and was filled with game and sightings. Our top guide/tracker team, Wilson / Melita, read every sign, track, and call. Being private, the reserve offers escape from East Africa's legendary crowding. Selenkay is also next to several Masai villages, one of which welcomed us in.We could not have been happier.
If you have never felt the excitement of the wild in the care of some beautiful African Masai people, this is the time to think about putting Porini Salankay on your list of 'to do' next holiday. We loved our second visit to the camp when we saw a pride of lion at sunset, of elephants, buffaloes, Eland and gerenuk, zebras and Thomson and grant gazelles to name a few. Loved every minute of the days. Shared many stories with the local people and rekindle with the village people. We felt safe and secured in our environment and ready to take off again soon.
This is my favourite Porini Camp. If you want a real bush experience then this is the place to go. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, the tents are spacious and comfortable and the food is delicious. The variety of game on view is fantastic and the drivers and guide spotters have an abundance of knowledge to share. You must go!!
We loved our visit to the Masai Village in this conservancy. The giraffes were also a highlight for us!
