The river was teeming with hippos , we also saw a rhino family that was thought to be rare. The variety of wildlife here is astounding. We felt that one should be careful in selecting the driver/Guide as they can be really good or make your trip futile at the time.
A real treat to get out of the vehicles and wander from the lodge on foot with our guides along the river banks; taking in views of crocs and hippos; elephant and impala on the opposite bank; enjoying finding a 3 day baby hippo "parked" on the waters edge - amazing!
Watched the reverse migration where the game is can the zebras and wildebeests outthink the crocodiles
Just to watch the wildlife and it's relationship to the river is so fascinating. How they use it and what lives in and around it is the stuff of National Geographic.
The Mara remains one of the best places in the world to see wildlife in its true natural habitat. No fences! Although the Masai have more and more cattle the symbiosis of man and wildlife remains valid.
The Mara River is muddy red but teaming with hippos and crocodiles. I stayed in a tent on the banks of the Mara at Ngerende in the Wild Riverview. From my tent I could hear the gurgling waters of the Mara, and here the grunts and girdling go hippos. At night the sky was bright with stars millions of stars. Orion and the southern cross adorned the evening sky.
Liked everything about it. Been game watching by the Mara River many times. Best times are with a bush breakfast when the hippos are lively.
Travelers who intend to watch the famous Mara River crossings here are some tips for you. Masai Mara is dusty during the dry period, so those who suffer from dust allergy take little care. One should have patience to see the crossings of thousands of wildebeast. At times one might not see the crossing at all even after waiting for several hours. It takes hours to reach the river from the main entrance of the Game Reserve. The guide should be an expert one to find the real place where crossings do take place. But it is not very pleasant to watch wildebeasts being gobbled up by crocks. I was rather very lucky to watch three crossings within a span of half an hour, a very rare phenomenon. If lucky one can see hippos too.
If you want to see some crocs and hippo in action from closely this is the place. We had a very good view and saw two hippo fighting where a crocodile watching them carefully.
Crossed this majestic river during excellent game viewing drives in Masai Mara. The river is alive with many crocodiles and hippos. Took a guided walk along the river which was a great thing and offered a fantastic experience!
We crossed the river to Little Governors' Camp in a little boat powered by a man pulling on to a rope strung across the river. We then had to climb a rather steep set of stairs to the camp. Not handicap accessible! Worth it, though :)
Edward and the team from Kenya Budget Holiday (http://www.kenyabudgetholiday.com) did a wonderful job of arranging our trip. We only had a week to see the some of the highlights of Kenya and Tanzania - Lakes Naivasha and Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorogoro Crater. The Masai Mara was my favourite park. We saw many gazelles and antelope, giraffes (my favourite!), lions, a cheetah and elephants along with ostriches and other birds. Our guide, Ephraim, was wonderful - he had so much knowledge to share about the area and its wildlife; he even helped me learn a few words of Swahili!
With my family (3 children of 1, 4 and 5 years) we enjoyed our bushbreakfast looking at the hyppos in the river! Fantastic experience!
